Mwambesi Nature Reserves

Nestled within the ecologically important forests of southern Tanzania, Mwambesi Nature Forest Reserve is among the priority conservation landscapes benefiting from the Building the Resilience of Forest Biodiversity to the Threats of Climate Change (BUREFOBI) Project. Through this initiative, the reserve is being strengthened to safeguard its unique biodiversity, enhance ecosystem resilience, and improve sustainable forest management practices.

The BUREFOBI Project is implemented by the Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT) and the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) Agency, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project supports long-term conservation while promoting climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods for communities living around the reserve.

Conservation Significance

Mwambesi Nature Forest Reserve plays an important role in conserving Tanzania's natural forest ecosystems by protecting indigenous flora and fauna, maintaining essential water catchments, and supporting climate regulation. The reserve contributes significantly to ecological connectivity and provides valuable ecosystem services that benefit both wildlife and surrounding communities.

Through the BUREFOBI Project, conservation efforts are improving the reserve's resilience to climate change, reducing pressures from habitat degradation and unsustainable resource use, and ensuring the long-term protection of its biodiversity. These interventions contribute to strengthening Tanzania's network of Nature Forest Reserves while supporting sustainable socio-economic development.
