Rising from the scenic highlands of northern Tanzania, Essimingor Nature Forest Reserve is a unique montane forest landscape recognized for its exceptional biodiversity, rich woody plant diversity, and important role in climate regulation and water catchment protection. As one of the priority landscapes under the Building the Resilience of Forest Biodiversity to the Threats of Climate Change (BUREFOBI) Project, the reserve is benefiting from targeted conservation interventions that strengthen ecosystem resilience and promote sustainable forest management.
The BUREFOBI Project is jointly implemented by the Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT) and the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) Agency, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project aims to protect biodiversity while improving the adaptive capacity of forests and surrounding communities to the impacts of climate change.
Conservation Significance
Essimingor Nature Forest Reserve is an ecologically significant dry evergreen montane forest supporting a high diversity of indigenous woody plant species and serving as an important carbon sink. Scientific studies have documented 54 tree and shrub species belonging to 29 plant families, highlighting the reserve's importance for biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.
Through the BUREFOBI Project, Essimingor is being strengthened to withstand the impacts of climate change, habitat degradation, wildfires, and unsustainable resource use. These efforts contribute to protecting Tanzania's natural forest heritage while maintaining vital ecosystem services and improving the resilience of both forests and local communities
