Project Sustainability

The sustainability of the project is firmly anchored in Tanzania’s robust policy framework, which ensures long-term institutional ownership of outcomes at national, provincial, and local levels. By embedding climate-resilient activities into Forest Management Plans (FMPs), Joint Management Agreements (JMAs), and other instruments grounded in national laws and policies, the project guarantees continuity beyond its implementation period.

Environmental sustainability is promoted through strengthened conservation effectiveness, safeguarding indigenous species, habitats, and ecological processes across the national network of Nature Forest Reserves (NFRs). Institutional sustainability is reinforced by building the planning and operational capacities of NFR management and village governments, notably Village Natural Resource Committees (VNRCs). Financial sustainability is advanced through mechanisms that diversify and increase revenue streams, enabling reinvestment in infrastructure, services, and biodiversity protection.

Social sustainability is secured by fostering inclusive partnerships with local communities, NGOs, and the private sector, ensuring co-management and cooperative governance arrangements that balance conservation with sustainable resource use. Together, these measures establish a resilient foundation that safeguards biodiversity, strengthens institutions, and delivers lasting benefits to communities well beyond the project’s lifespan.
