This is Nature Reserves which is located in the Coast Region near Dar es Salaam, the Pugu and Kazimzumbwi Nature Forest Reserves represent one of Tanzania’s most ecologically significant remnants of the Eastern Arc and Coastal Forest biodiversity hotspot. The reserves provide critical habitat for numerous endemic and threatened plant and animal species while delivering essential ecosystem services, including climate regulation, water catchment protection, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration.
Pugu-Kazimzumbwi Nature Forest Reserves is among the priority conservation landscapes supported under the Building the Resilience of Forest Biodiversity to the Threats of Climate Change (BUREFOBI) Project. The project is jointly implemented by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, through the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) Agency under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
Through the BUREFOBI Project, conservation interventions in Pugu-Kazimzumbwi focus on strengthening ecosystem resilience to climate change by restoring degraded forest habitats, enhancing biodiversity monitoring, controlling invasive alien species, improving forest governance, promoting sustainable livelihoods for adjacent communities, and supporting scientific research and environmental education. These efforts contribute to safeguarding the ecological integrity of the reserves while ensuring that forest resources continue to benefit present and future generations.
